A little while back, I was asked to interview a family member (the older the better) about some aspect of their past and upload it to a site called StoryCorps. I decided to interview my dad and, rather than ask some overused or ‘politically correct’ question, I decided to ask him about the ‘nanny state’ in America. We discussed what the nanny state is “when government or society tries to control people’s environment and control their actions with the goal that nothing bad will ever happen to you.”
He had interesting things to say about the control the government and society try to exert on people as well as the failure of the nanny state. My father concluded that people are not held accountable for their actions as much as they should. He also pointed out that when people are protected too much, they don’t know how to respond to the inevitable controversy that lurks in their futures. This recent election is a perfect example of this. High school, middle school, and even elementary school students walked out of class and went on strike while others burned down buildings and smashed windows. They had no idea how to react, so they resorted to the basic fight or flight responses. The interview contains a lot of information that you might find interesting, so you can find it here: https://storycorps.me/interviews/the-nanny-state-from-the-eyes-of-my-old-man/
